The census of the media of the youth in Moldova, taken by the Young Journalist’s Center in March – May this year revealed financing and equipment problems and shortage of specialists in the field. Therefore, a part of the media outlets intended for young people risk disappearing over the next two years.

Director of the project “Census of the media of the youth in Moldova” Violeta Mihailova, in a news conference at IPN, said that 107 newspapers, 34 journals, 14 radio stations, 30 online platforms and a TV channel were examined during the three months. In the Transnistrian region, there were identified 13 newspapers, a journal and four online platforms for the youth.

The census results show the lyceum publications prevail. These account for 89% of the total number of newspapers for young people. Only 14% of the newspapers are communitarian ones. Among the most important partners of the editorial staffs are the Ministry of Youth and Sport, the newspaper “Faclia”, the paper “Cuvantul” and the local libraries.

50% of the programs of the radio stations for the youth are diverse in character, while 43% are informative. In 79% of the cases, the radio programs are broadcast live. A common problem of the radio stations for the youth, as in the case of newspapers, is the lack of funds and equipment.

Project coordinator Vlad Calus said the census of the online platforms showed that 65% of the editorial staffs use video platforms to publish the information, while 33% use social networking sites for the purpose. 70% of the published materials are own products. 78% of the online platforms use equally texts and images, while 33% use video recordings.

The data collected within the census of the media of the youth in Moldova will be used to work out the Strategy of the Young Journalist’s Center of Moldova for 2016-2020, which will be aimed at supporting and strengthening the network of the media for the youth.
