Passengers will be able to faster recover their money for unused plane tickets bought from airlines that went bankrupt. A draft law providing for this was given a first reading, IPN reports.

The bill supplements the Insolvency Law with a new point according to which passengers who bought plane tickets will be among the first to receive a refund when the company becomes insolvent.

The informative note to the bill says that economic agents on bank accounts collect huge amounts after selling tickets for non-operated flights, becoming overindebted to passengers. The year 2023 saw a negative trend in the number of complaints submitted by consumers in the field of civil aviation. Until now, passengers were only ranked seventh by priority on the repayment of debts. Now they will be among the first.

The authors of the draft law noted that there are over 28,000 citizens who didn’t receive their money back for tickets purchased from Air Moldova. It goes to 75,000 tickets to the value of about €9 million.

The legislative proposal is to be given a second reading by Parliament.
