The Communist parliamentary group sent a letter to President Nicolae Timofti, asking that he should put forward an initiative to hold a national referendum on the signing of the Association Agreement. The Communists consider only a national plebiscite can decide the country’s fate, IPN reports.
In the letter, the Communists say that since his illegal election, Nicolae Timofti has taken an active part in the ‘usurpation of the state power’ “However, we address you as to a citizen of Moldova who can contribute formally to the stabilization of the political situation in the country and to the diminution of the risk of Moldova disappearing as a state so as to obtain at least a grain of legality in fulfilling your duties as head of state,” says the letter.
The Communists also say they give the head of state two weeks to take a decision. “We note that namely you can today become the personage that will cope with the historical mission and will shift to the people’s side so as not to allow the country to be liquidated,” reads the letter.
Moldova is to sign the Association Agreement with the EU on June 27.
