Pedestrians hurt in one in three traffic accidents

The Traffic Police Department will conduct during April 26 – May 2 the campaign “Pedestrian” to raise public awareness of the risks of jaywalking and disrespect for pedestrians. Paulina Iachimovschi, spokesperson for the Traffic Police, has told Info-Prim Neo that during the campaign the traffic officers will monitor the conduct of pedestrians and drivers and will sanction instances of failing to give way to pedestrians within crosswalks as well as instances of jaywalking. “One of the leading causes of traffic accidents is the disrespect for pedestrian regulations, both with regards to jaywalking and reckless driving”, said Paulina Iachimovschi, adding that statistically one in two pedestrians hurt in traffic accidents are jaywalkers. In 40 percent of cases the driver sees the pedestrian too late to stop. Pedestrians are hurt in every third accident. From the beginning of this year, there were registered 488 accidents on Moldova’s roads in which pedestrians were injured.
