“Mihail Ceachir” High School in Ceadîr-Lunga, “Matei Basarab” High School in Chisinau and “Ștefan cel Mareˮ High School in Balti will be made energy efficient and the total investments will rise to €1 million. The actions are part of a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Ministry of Education and Research and the organization People in Need. Minister Dan Perciun noted that it this is proper support for reducing the subsequent maintenance costs of these buildings and an opportunity to renovate both the façade of the buildings and the interior, IPN reports.

The memorandum also provides for the editing of 10,000 textbooks for students enrolled in the National Program for the Study of the Romanian Language and also for covering of costs for training groups with Ukrainian refugees who learn the Romanian language. “Beyond the Romanian language program and Model Schools, we established nice cooperation relations starting from a program implemented by People in Need in the Czech Republic: “One World”. It goes to training through documentaries on topics of global interest, awareness-raising documentaries that address topics of international and national importance and offer the opportunity for non-formal discussions on various topics. Next week, our teachers will start to be trained so that they are able to use this documentation in the teaching process and we believe that this will contribute to the development of an active citizenship among our students,” said the minister.

Country Director of People in Need Moldova Guillermo Llinás said that in 2024 the organization will invest over €2 million in the development of schools in Moldova. This significant investment will focus on digitalization and energy efficiency of educational institutions and the development of the national education system. The commitment goes beyond infrastructure as the importance of promoting inclusion and support, especially in times of crisis, comes first.

“Thanks to the generous contribution of the Czech government, a part of these investments will be dedicated to the integration of Ukrainian refugees into the national education environment. By providing the necessary resources and support, we aim to create an environment in which every child can develop, regardless of their background. Education is the cornerstone of progress and prosperity,” noted Guillermo Llinás.

Also, free lunches will be provided for children from disadvantaged families who study at Model Schools and a number of activities related to the inclusion of refugee children from Ukraine in the educational process in the Republic of Moldova will be supported.
