The people have more confidence in the police subdivisions than in the police, shows a survey commissioned by the Ministry of the Interior and carried out by the Public Policy Institute (IPP) and the sociological company CBS-AXA. The firefighters and rescuers enjoy the greatest trust. They are followed by the police inspectorates and the carabineers. The people trust less the sector police, the border police, the patrolling police and the criminal polite, IPN reports.

In a news conference on June 24, IPP director Arcadie Barbarosie said the people trust more the police subdivisions probably because they know more about them as they deal with them more often in there daily life, while the general perception of the police is possibly formed by other ways – the mass media and scandalous cases.

The people consider that the crime rate in the country is high, but say that this rate in the area where they live is not high. According to the respondents, corruption is the most serious problem affecting the police. Among other problems are the low professional degree, low salaries, insolence, and poor equipment.

Attending the event, Minister of the Interior Dorin Recean said the given survey is only one of a series of polls. The next survey will be launched in December. All the data will be analyzed thoroughly and will become part of the plan of action in the future.

The nationwide survey regarding the confidence in, image, prestige and appreciation of the subdivisions of the Ministry of the Interior was financed by the U.S. Embassy. It covered a sample of 1,228 people from all over Moldova, except the Transnistrian region.
