The parliamentary groups of the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (PLDM) and the Liberal Reformist Party (PLR) announced that they filed a proposal to initiate a national referendum for reviewing the Constitution’s article concerning the appointment and dismissal of Moldova’s President by the people’s vote to the Constitutional Court for approval and for assessing its constitutionality, IPN reports.

The proposal was signed by 37 members of Parliament. “We are sure that the amendments proposed to Articles 78, 85, 89, 91 and 135 will ensure the efficient governance of the country so as to meet the people’s wishes to have guaranteed rights and civil freedoms and respected interests in conditions of democracy, political and social stability,” it is said in a joint communiqué of the two factions.

Immediately after the Constitutional Court passes judgment, the factions of the PLDM and PLR will submit the draft decision concerning the holding of a referendum for amending the Constitution simultaneously with the November 30 ordinary parliamentary elections to Parliament.

The communiqué says the proposal was discussed by the Council of the Pro-European Coalition. The parliamentary group of the PLDM stated a generally favorable opinion about the initiative, with slightly different technical viewpoints as regards the procedure for implementing it.
