The leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) Vlad Filat reiterated that the legislative elections should take place not later than November 30, 2014. The party does not support the modification of the electoral system, but is ready to discuss related issues with the coalition partners. The ex-Premier made such statements in an interview for Radio Free Europe, being quoted by IPN.
Referring to the rumored dates of the ordinary parliamentary elections, Vlad Filat said they are for holding the elections on November 30. “It’s true that we entered an electoral year, but some launched the election campaign too early. We have yet a lot to work until the elections. There may be different viewpoints, but the legal norm clearly stipulates when the elections should take place. The date is November 30, 2014. Those who speak about elections next year must understand that the elections can take place within three months of the previous elections. That is the end of February. I don’t see how we can enter the election campaign during the winter holidays or when it is cold outside and the communication with the voters cannot be organized,” said the chairman of the PLDM.
He considers that Moldova is not yet ready for the amendment of the electoral system, but said the PLDM is ready to have discussions with the coalition partners on the issue. “We surely wait for the appraisal of the Venice Commission, which will be made public at the end of March. But this appraisal will also not determine the adoption of a joint voting system. Moldova must be institutionally prepared for this change. We want competitions of ideas, projects and people in election campaigns. We are against this modification as Moldova is not ready for such a system,” stated Vlad Filat.
He added that they haven’t discussed the creation of an electoral bloc for the future legislative elections in the government coalition. “The political parties must take part in the campaign individually as certain commitments are assumed in elections and they must be included in the future platform. The PLDM will take part in the elections by itself. We were sincere with the voters and will not try to hide behind different political or other kinds of schemes in order to obtain votes,” said Vlad Filat.
He also said that he does not rule out the possibility of holding plebiscites simultaneously with the parliamentary elections, but avoided saying the issues that may be put up for referendum. “It would have been ideal if we had been able to amend the Constitution in Parliament. Certainly we must look for solutions to modify certain provisions of the Constitution. There are other problems that can be solved now only by referendum. We will discuss all the projects in the coalition until we reach a compromise. The important initiative launched unilaterally cannot produce results,” said the Liberal-Democratic leader.
