The police didn’t really take steps to arrest former minister of the interior Gheorghe Papuc, who two weeks ago was sentenced to four years in jail for professional negligence. Such conclusions were formulated in the talk show “Reply” on Prime TV channel, IPN reports.

Director of “Promo-LEX” Association Ion Manole said that this case increased the people’s distrust in the law enforcement bodies.  “This is a confused decision that looks rather like a scenario. The victims of the April 7, 2009 events have waited for six years for somebody to be held accountable for what happened. Now that somebody was ultimately condemned, the court decision is not implemented. This is a shameful decision and a negative message addressed to society. We are daily informed that individuals ill-treated or insulted police officers. The people do not have confidence in the state institutions, while the employees of these institutions do not enjoy the people’s respect,” he stated.

Vladimir Kovali, former vice police commissioner of Chisinau municipality, considers the police didn’t really take steps to look for Gheorghe Papuc. “It’s impossible not to find a man whose face is known by each second person in such a small country during two weeks,” he stated.

Member of the Supreme Council of Magistrates Teodor Carnat believes the police didn’t appropriately look for the former general. “We should not forget that Papuc was minister of the interior and many of his former inferiors whom he promoted and to whom he did other favors continue to work in the police system,” he said.

Within a telephone call, the president of the Chisinau Appeals Court Ion Plesca said the decision to condemn Papuc was taken after 4pm and it was already late to make approaches concerning the former general’s arrest. “When we withdrew for deliberation, we didn’t know what decision we will take and thus could not call the police. The situation would have been different if there had been judicial police, but there is no such body. Similar cases happen frequently. Last week, two persons tried outside prison disappeared after the Appeals Court sentenced them to nine years in jail,” he stated.
