An investigation officer of the Falesti Police Inspectorate was arrested on suspicion that he struck by his car the consult of Romania’s Consulate in Balti and didn’t stop to help the injured. According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the pedestrian was crossing the street legally, by the crosswalk, IPN reports.
The accident occurred on Stefan cel Mare St of Balti municipality on November 2. According to investigators, the police officer was speeding. The pedestrian was rushed to the Balti Municipal Hospital with serious injuries. His state of health is serious, but stable. The policeman tried to mislead the investigators by making another person assume blame for the accident.
The policeman was remanded in custody for 72 hours initially. On November 4, the prosecutors charged him with violation of traffic rules and will request the judge of inquiry to issue a warrant for holding this on remand for 30 days.
The police officer faces three to seven years in jail and ban on driving for up to four years.
