“We promised that we will bring things at the state institutions in order and we have a new confirmation in this regard,” stated Prime Minister Pavel Filip, referring to the initiation of a criminal case over appropriation of funds allocated to the National Bureau of Statistics. In a message posted on a social networking site, the Premier says that by initiating inspections at the Bureau, they transmitted a very important message for the public opinion, namely that the Government will make sure that taxpayers’ money are used for the public interest and in accordance with the law, IPN reports.
Pavel Filip wrote that after the state bodies identified irregularities in the organization of the 2014 census, he asked that the director of the National Bureau of Statistics should be dismissed and notified the Prosecutor General’s Office of this case. As a result, the Chisinau Prosecutor’s Office started a criminal case over appropriation of funds allotted to the Bureau for taking the census. It is now the duty of the investigation bodies to identify those who committed the legalities at the Bureau.
“I want you to know that we will not stop here. We already ensured order at the State Tax Inspectorate and the Customs Service and this led to higher amounts collected into the state budget. We will continue to act so as to optimize the activity of the state institutions. This way we will ensure public services of a higher quality for the people,” said the Premier.
The Chisinau Prosecutor’s Office started a criminal case over appropriation of funds allocated to the National Bureau of Statistics for taking the population and dwelling census of 2014. According to prosecutors, 1.8 million lei of the costs incurred by the Bureau for taking the census was misused. Thus, in 2013 – 2016, civil servants of the institition employed an illegal scheme to appropriate money intended for taking the census.
