An ex-vice director of the Public Property Agency and a former deputy minister of economy will be investigated as suspects in the case of Banca de Economii (BEM). These are suspected of professional negligence through inappropriate fulfillment of the duties in July – August 2013 as a result of which the state’s controlling interest in the BEM was lost, IPN reports.
In a communique, the PGO says the prosecutors investigating the case had a number of meetings with representatives of the FBI, while the competent U.S. authorities were asked to provide legal assistance in elucidating the bank frauds committed with the involvement of offshore companies.
Recently, the investigation group questioned a number of officials of different ranks, including acting minister of justice Vladimir Grosu, Deputy Speaker Liliana Palihovici, MP Oleg Reidman, former minister of finance Veaceslav Negruta, former head of the Parliament’s commission on economy, budget and finance Veaceslav Ionita and former head of the National Commission for Financial Markets Artur Gherman.
The prosecutors ordered seizing documents from the Parliament Building, the Government’s State Chancellery, the National Bank of Moldova, the Public Property Agency, the Ministry of Finance and the National Committee for Financial Stability. The mentioned entities were also asked to provide information about the Government decisions by which the BEM, Banca Sociala and Unibank were offered money from the central bank’s reserves after November 27, 2014.
Given the period of time indicated in the communique, the new suspects may be the ex-vice director of the Public Property Agency Angela Susanu and former deputy minister of economy Dumitru Godoroja.
