The reformation of the legal system in Moldova depends on the attitude of the political class and the willingness of the parliamentary majority to implement a real reform in this area, member of the Romanian Parliament Tudor Pantiru, who is native of Moldova, stated for Info-Prim Neo.
“The legal system reform depends on the political class’s attitude, which should go well with the entire society, not only a certain part. If they tend to obtain benefits for themselves, the efforts to reform justice will not produce results,” said Tudor Pantiru.
According to him, the politicians of the Alliance for European Integration (AEI) must understand that the chance to succeed, including for the alliance, is to make the reform of the legal system a priority. “Any other reform is not possible if the legal system is not truly independent and functional,” said Tudor Pantiru.
He also said that the main problem resides in the rivalry that exists inside the ruling alliance. “In Moldova, it is not a struggle between ideas and conceptions, but a personal struggle that turns into enmity,” stated the MP.
In a news conference held at Info-Prim Neo on May 23, Ion Dron, chairman of the NGO “Center of Initiatives and Public Authorities Monitoring”, suggested that Tudor Pantiru should come to Moldova to head a council for the reform of the legal system.
Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, Tudor Pantiru said he is not against leading such a council. “Ion Dron probably knows what I did in the first Parliament of Moldova. I brought things in justice in order. The reform I implemented was considered one of the most solid in the former USSR, but the Communists came and destroyed everything,” said Tudor Pantiru.
He stated that if he comes to head such a council, he will need a team that would fulfill his orders. He stressed that in Moldova there are people who can successfully implement the reform, but they should solve the political problem first. “The components of the AEI should have will to reform the legal system and should allow a commission to work out strategies and draft sets of laws that will serve the interests of an independent legal system, not of the members of the alliance,” said the lawmaker.
Tudor Pantiru entered the Parliament of Romania in December 2008. He was a member of the Parliament of Moldova, chairman of the law commission, Ambassador and Representative of Moldova to the UN, international judge at the ECHR, and president of UN tribunal. He was awarded Moldova’s Order of the Republic.
