Romanian language “Emergency Service”

“People of various ages call the National Terminology Center all day long and all year round, just like the Emergency Service”, the NTC director Inga Druta told Info-Prim Neo. “People call us from various districts and towns to find more about a certain expression, the meaning of a word or how to translate a phrase. Recently, most who call us are children who need help for writing homework”, she said. Inga Druta said the phone number for linguistic consultations 29 59 98 is nearly always busy. She explained that most people are not used to search on the web, but even those who use Internet still call the Center, as not all the answers can be found on the web. “Besides, Internet isn’t a sure and correct source”, Druta mentioned. NTC faced serious problems in 2005, when many employees were fired and it was nearly closed. However, things got better in June 2006, when NTC became part of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Philology. NTC offers various services such as translations, editing specialized texts, approving company names or advertising texts, identifying and correcting people’s names and linguistic consultations. The National Terminology Center was founded 1989, a few months after Romanian became official language and Cyrillic writing was replaced with the Latin alphabet. The institution researches and implements special terminologies in Moldova’s administrative, economic and social structures.
