More than five years from the moment the offense was committed, prosecutors finally manged to obtain an imprisonment sentence against a Tiraspol man who had been charged with sex trafficking. The sentence, however, cannot be enforced as the man's whereabouts are not known.
As the Prosecutor General's Office recalled in a press release, in 2009 the man recruited a young woman who was promised a vendor's job in Turkey, but in reality the intention was to traffic her into sex exploitation. In February 2009, the Botanica District Court sentenced the man to 7 years in prison. In 2010, however, the Chisinau Court of Appeals decided to acquit and release him. In May 2011, the Supreme Court of Justice reversed the decision and ordered that the case be retried by the Court of Appeals in a different formation.
Recently, more than five years from the commission of the offense, the Court of Appeals decided to uphold the 7 years' sentence ruled by the first court.
