The situation of the freedom of the media in Moldova is not pink in color. The authorities must make more effort to improve this segment, said the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatović who is in Chisinau on a visit. The official had meetings with senior government officials and civil society, IPN reports.

In a press conference on March18, Dunja Mijatović said one of the measures that must be taken to improve the freedom of the media is to ensure media ownership transparency. Political will is needed, stated the OSCE representative, voicing hope that the Parliament of Moldova will show such will.

Transition to digital television is another priority mentioned. The authorities implemented reforms in this field, but a lot is yet to be done, said Dunja Mijatović, recommending civil society to become more actively involved in decision-making.

Asked if some of the Russian stations that incite hatred and violence should be closed, Dunja Mijatović said this won’t be a democratic decision. If there are such programs, they should be banned, but the station must not be closed.
