Southeast European states, including Moldova, are considering the possibility of creating a regional solidarity fund for reciprocal assistance during natural disasters. The creation of such a fund was suggested by foreign experts given the more often calamities that affect this part of Europe, IPN reports.

The head of the Parliament’s commission on economy, budget and finance Veaceslav Ionita said that Moldova faces serious problems as regards home insurance and the whole burden in case of natural disasters is borne by the state budget. About 500 million lei was allocated from the state budget during the last few years as a result of calamities.

“There are two types of home insurance – for natural disasters and for technological disasters caused by human factors. In Moldova, the home insurance market is very small. That’s why it is considered the possibility of joining the regional networks,” said Veaceslav Ionita.

He also said that the local insurers do not have the necessary financial resources to pay insurance for damage caused by natural disasters. The states that will create the regional solidarity fund will pay a contribution to it, but the size wasn’t agreed yet.
