Surgeon and politician Nicolae Testemitanu was awarded the Order of the Republic posthumously, under a decree signed by Acting President Mihai Ghimpu on September 20, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The award was given in gratitude and appreciation for the special contribution towards developing the healthcare sector, for exceptional results in working out and implementing the system for organizing the medical assistance in rural areas, for the efforts made to train the national, scientific and medical staff, and for prodigious managerial, methodological and teaching work.
Nicolae Testemitanu was Minister of Health of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic in 1963 and in 1968. He was dismissed from post for his strategy to encourage the promotion of Romanian specialists in the national medicine, and for opposing the policy pursued by the Communist Party of Moldova. He died in 1086. There are streets, buildings and medals that bear his name, including the Chisinau-based State University of Medicine and Pharmaceutics.
