The criminal case against two magistrates of the Chisinau District Court and one of the Chisinau Court of Appeal on suspicion of influence peddling has been referred to the court for examination of the merits, the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office announced, IPN reports.

According to the General Prosecutor's Office, the three judges (two of whom are spouses) acted on the basis of prior agreements to influence and obtain favorable solutions in criminal cases pending before the courts.

In one of the episodes, the two defendants, husband and wife, both magistrates at the Chisinau District Court and another judge at the Chisinau Court of Appeal, tried to influence the judges of the Chisinau Court of Appeal to apply a more lenient preventive measure against a person remanded in custody in exchange for €3000.

In another case, the two judge spouses tried, through another person, to influence the work of public officials from the Public Services Agency to facilitate the obtaining of a driving license in violation of the law, in exchange for the negotiated sum of 800 euro.

The defendants did not admit their guilt and the criminal case was sent to the Chisinau District Court for examination of the merits.

For the crime of influence peddling, the law provides for a fine of 100 000 to 150 000 lei or imprisonment of up to 6 years for extortion, and for the promise of money, the law provides for a fine of 100 000 to 150 000 lei or imprisonment of up to 3 years.

At the same time, for the execution of the fine and possible seizure, assets owned by the defendants have been seized in the amount of approximately 1 550 000 lei.
