Three members of a criminal group specialized in smuggling uranium, who were arrested in June 2011 in the center of Chisinau, were sentenced. Two of them will serve time in prison, while the third will pay a fine, Info-Prim Neo has learned from the Prosecutor General’s Office. Among the three culprits is a Russian woman aged 38, who lives in Tiraspol. She was sentenced to three years in jail. Her accomplice got five years behind bars, while the third offender, who is a jurist, was fined 15,000 lei. Five persons suspected of smuggling radioactive substances were arrested in central Chisinau at the end of last June. According to the prosecutors, last April the accused persons created a stable criminal community and acted according to a plan – the group’s leader obtained radioactive substances, while the other members found buyers. The revenues were divided depending on the role and contribution each of the members. The culprits had 1 kilogram of uranium that they intended to sell for €32 million. The other members of the criminal group were put on the wanted list and are investigated in a separate legal case.
