The Tourism Agency will suggest that the Ministry of Education should include a new specialty in the education programs called ‘tour guide’ from September 2014. Contacted by IPN, the Agency’s director Nicolae Platon said there will be worked out regulations concerning the attestation of tour guides.
“Unfortunately, currently no higher education institution trains tour guides. We need skilled personnel that would know the specific features of Moldova’s tourism industry, given that we aim to create 20 tourism routes. I personally took part in events where the tour guides were amateurs and the presented information was incorrect,” said Nicolae Platon.
According to him, the tour guides must have specialized higher education, know 1-2 world languages, have appropriate clothing and agreeable appearance, know well the country’s history and culture, the economic and political life.
There are 40 professional tour guides in Moldova at present. There are also over 300 guides who are employed by museums to conduct extra-museum trips to specific sights of the tourist area.
