Moldovan citizens can travel to Turkey with just their ID card, without the need for a passport. The measure has been in force since 2019 and is part of a bilateral agreement signed with the Turkish state. With the introduction of the new ID cards from April this year, the Republic of Moldova is to inform the Turkish side and send specimens of the new document. After this procedure, the new documents can be officially used for traveling to Turkey.

The clarifications were made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the request of IPN.

As for minors traveling to Turkey, the MFA said that the use of the ID card is not age-restricted. Minors holding this document can cross the border under the same conditions as adults. If the child does not have an ID card, travel can only take place on the basis of a passport. A birth certificate is not a valid document for crossing the border.

It should be noted that the national identity document gives the right to enter and exit Turkey, but does not guarantee access to domestic services. For hotel accommodation, currency exchange or presentation to local authorities, Moldovans must comply with Turkish internal legislation and present the documents requested by the local authorities.

Turkey is the only country with which the Republic of Moldova has such an ID card-based travel agreement. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there are no other treaties in force allowing travel with national ID cards only.
