Olympic weightlifting champion Tudor Casapu appeared before the reporters to tell them that he feels fine after the liver transplant and thanked those who helped him pay for this costly operation that was performed in Romania, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“When I was in the hospital, my grandchildren asked me why I was named former Olympic champion in the mass media. This made me fight and win,” Tudor Casapu said, adding it was his second great victory in life.
He thanked his colleagues, the Ministry of the Interior, the National Olympic Committee, the Chisinau City Hall and other donors about whom he does not know much for helping him pay for the surgery.
In the same news conference, Minister of Health Vladimir Hotineanu said many experienced doctors struggled for the champion's life. “Regretfully, Moldova does not have a Transplant Agency, but it might be created the next years,” he said.
Tudor Casapu was operated in Romania on August 25.
In the Barcelona Olympics of 1992, the athlete represented Moldova as part of the united CIS team and won gold in the 75kg class weightlifting event. He is the only Moldovan Olympic champion in an individual event so far. He was awarded the Order of the Republic.
