U.S. Ambassador in Chisinau James D. Pettit said the first deputy chairman of the Democratic Party Vlad Plahotniuc went to the United States as part of an official delegation led by Minister of Economy Octavian Calmac. During a public event, the diplomat commented on the reports that aroused controversy in society, about Vlad Plahotniuc’s meetings with officials in Washington, especially over the Democrat’s status on this visit, IPN reports.

The ambassador said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration issued a diplomatic note saying that the Moldovan delegation will be headed by Octavian Calmac.

“I know that there were productive discussions not only with the U.S. government, but also with international partners. We support such kinds of visits. We received a request from the delegation to meet with Victoria Nuland, while Mister Plahotniuc is a member of the delegation,” stated James D. Pettit.

The diplomat added that he does not know what post Vlad Plahotniuc holds, but this does not represent the government, but a party of the ruling alliance. The U.S. communicates with the government, with the opposition and with all the political parties because they must maintain relations with this government. This does not yet mean that they support it.

Recently, Vlad Plahotniuc had been on a working visit to the United States, where he met with a number of officials. He presented himself as executive coordinator of the Council of the ruling alliance. This caused controversy in society.
