The Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM) is controlled by one person who formally withdrew from the administration of this party, former Prime Minister Valeriu Strelet, who is the acting chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party, said in the event “Truth or Challenge”, making reference to the ex-first-deputy chairman of the PDM Vlad Plahotniuc, IPN reports.

“The PDM is controlled by one person and this is evident, even if this person announced that he leaves the administrative post. We, the Liberal-Democrats, can no longer tolerate such a situation. It existed earlier too, when we negotiated, but now it is more obvious. We said that we can govern in a different way, with the hands untied and according to the laws, not in accordance with the decisions taken by the Council of the alliance. The Democrats probably felt that their positions that they got as a result of so much work are in danger and decided to dismiss the Government,” stated Valeriu Strelet.

As to the conditions in which Valeriu Strelet accepted to be named Premier, the politician said that his party colleague Maia Sandu was supported by the PLDM for this post. Effort was made to convince her to accept it, but the other alliance colleagues – the Democrats and the Liberals – employed all kinds of stratagems and she ultimately refused to run for this post. “Somebody had to run and I treated this proposal with responsibility. During the 90 days that I held this post, I tried hard to do what’s best for the country,” he stated.

Valeriu Strelet noted that he cannot explain the resignation tendered by the National Bank governor Dorin Dragutanu only one day before the arrival of the IMF mission and the dismissal of the Governor several days before inviting a new IMF mission. The politician said the agreement with the IMF is not convenient to particular persons because it provides for the implementation of particular reforms.

Referring to the future Government, the Lib-Dem said it will be a coalition one as the perspective for a bipolar system to appear in Moldova is far away and probably tens of years more will pass until this situation changes.

As to the PLDM’s prospects, Valeriu Strelet said the party will undergo a number of changes because a part of his colleagues are members of the PLDM only for conjunctural interests and will not resist periods of opposition or pressure. He believes that an extraordinary congress of the PLDM should be soon convened to elect a leader and Maia Sandu will be undoubtedly supported if she wants to join the team and hold this post.
