The tax for using roads by motor vehicles registered abroad will be paid online as of February 20. The Ministry of Transport and Road Infrastructure launched the website vinieta.gov.md, where drivers will be able to pay the vignette through the mpay system. According to the authorities, this payment collection mechanism will enable to eliminate the lines that form at border crossing points, IPN reports.

According to the Ministry’s state secretary Oleg Tofilat, customs officers will check if the vignette was paid not when entering the country, as now, but when leaving Moldova. The money will be collected online at any branch of Moldova-Angroindbank, without involving the Customs Service in this process.

Currently, when entering the country, any driver with a motor vehicle registered abroad must have the vignette paid. The payer submits an application to the Customs Service, which authorizes it, and then goes to the bank and returns to the customs post with a proof of payment. “The waiting time at border crossing points increases thus and nobody is satisfied. Also, if the validity period of the vignette expired while the vehicle was in the country, the driver has to go to the Customs Service’s posts and pay the vignette again. We set the goal of reducing lines at customs posts and of simplifying the extension of the vignette. The proposed solution does not imply state budget costs,” stated Oleg Tofilat.

Eugeniu Ursu, director of the E-Governance Center, said on vinieta.gov.md the driver will introduce general data about the unit of transport, such as body, trailer, number of the vehicle registration passport and number of the driver’s passport. The drivers will also be able to verify if the vignette was paid correctly.

Moldova-Agroindbank vice president Oleg Paingu said the vignette is now paid at 40 branches of the bank that are situated in all the border crossing points. “Based on the contract signed with the Ministry of Transport, payments now can be made at all the sales points of Moldova-Agroindbank, which is at 67 branches located in all the country’s districts and at 115 agencies,” said the vice president. The drivers will pay a tax of 5 lei to 1.5% of the sum, depending on the value of the vignette, for the filling out of the application by the bank’s employees.
