Over 35,000 black-orange ribbons will be handed out to passers-by starting April 30. This drive named “St. George's ribbon” is not political and pursues to mark the 64th anniversary of the end of World War II, said Aleksey Babenko, the press secretary of the Russian Embassy to Chisinau, at a news conference on Wednesday, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The action started in 2005 by a news agency from Russia. Volunteers have distributed such ribbons to millions of passers-by during four years. In 2008, the action spread over 30 states.
“My grandfather's victory is my victory!”, “I understand and am proud,” are the slogans of the drive.
“St. George's ribbon is associated with glory and courage,” said the press secretary. It can be worn on one's chest so that the young generation does not forget how we won in the worst war of the last century, Babenko said.
The black and orange colors were used for the prestigious Russian military order -- “St. George's Cross”, for one of the most important decorations in the Second World War -- “the Order of Honor”, and for the medal -- “For victory in the Second World War.”
In 2008, the RIA Novosti agency from Russia, not without Russia's support, distributed some 25,000 black-orange ribbons in Moldova.
