More than 223,000 people voted in the municipality of Chisinau by 7pm, two hours before the closing of polling places. This is 35.1% of the voters put on the electoral registers. In the first round of the mayoral elections on May 20, about 200,000 voters cast their ballots by the same hour, IPN reports.
Today, the voters aged between 56 and 70 are the most active ones. About 75,000 people of this age category voted by 7pm. As many as 55,500 voters were aged between 26 and 40. Slightly over 55,000 voters were aged between 41 and 55.
From territorial viewpoint, the most active voters are those from Rascani district (37.3%). These are followed, in descending order, by the voters in Centru (36.88%), Botanica (35.77%), Buiucani (35.44%) and Ciocana (34.6%) districts.
In the suburban communities, the turnout was 31.23%. In Sangera, only one fourth of those eligible to vote marked their ballots. In Tohatin, the voter turnout was the highest among the suburban localities– 37.28%.
In a press briefing, Chisinau District Electoral Council deputy head Ina Babin said the Council have received no complaints so far. She reiterated the Council’s call to stop any electoral agitation.
There is no minimum turnout of voters required for the runoff vote to be validated. The candidate who gains the largest number of votes emerges victorious. The elected mayor will hold office for a year, until the local general mayoral elections of 2019.
