The discussions on the election of the head of state were suspended because some of the members of the ruling alliance are not in Moldova, Valeriu Munteanu, deputy chairman of the Liberal Party, has told Info-Prim Neo. “When everybody returns to Moldova, the discussions will be resumed, first of all within the Alliance for European Integration,” said the Liberal lawmaker. As to the PCRM’s request to initiate discussions to identify a candidate for the presidency, Valeriu Munteanu said it was pure speculation. “The AEI clearly said that negotiations with the PCRM can be held only in the name of the alliance, by representatives designated by it. As the PCRM wants to have discussions with every component of the AEI separately, its intentions to reconfigure the government are clear, but this is not opportune now. The main objectives are to elect the head of state and to maintain the current format of the government,” said Valeriu Munteanu. He expressed his conviction that the PCRM wants early legislative elections and will make effort to cause them. “If they consider that the fielding of a candidate guarantees such an outcome, they will do it,” said the Liberal MP. He also said that not anyone can become head of state. “If the PL had accepted the candidacy of Zinaida Greceanyi in December, the President would have been elected. But we will not change our position. We will never vote for Zinaida Greceanyi. We cannot sacrifice the post of President for four years to a political doll,” said Valeriu Munteanu. The AEI Council is to meet in a limited format next week to decide what steps to take in continuation. New presidential elections will take place in Parliament on January 15. No person has filed the documents needed to be registered as presidential candidate so far.
