Scientists of the American company Colossal Biosciences brought back to life the wolf species Dire wolves, which disappeared more than 12,000 years ago, IPN reports.

The scientists created three wolf cubs using ancient DNA, cloning and gene-editing technology to modify the genes of a gray wolf, the closest living relative of the prehistoric wolf, Colossal Biosciences announced  on Monday, April 7.

The result is a hybrid species similar in appearance to its extinct predecessor.

Dire wolves were larger in size than gray wolves and had a slightly wider head, thick fur, and stronger jaws.
