PAS is the party for which the unionist electorate is voting today, even if the party officially does not promote the desire for union. The opinion of Mihai Bologan, the director of the company "Date Inteligente", was expressed during the public debate "What is happening in the unionist political segment?", organized by the IPN News Agency. Mihai Bologan presented a series of relevant data on the identity and linguistic perceptions of Moldovan citizens, as well as the dynamics of political forces promoting unionism.
"Our sociological data, which are also confirmed by census data, show that out of seven ethnic Romanian citizens, six declare themselves Moldovan and one Romanian. It is true that in the past the proportion was much higher. In 2004, 2% declared themselves Romanian and over 70% Moldovans," said the director of the sociological company Date Inteligente, Mihai Bologan.
Referring to language use in everyday life, the IData director noted a significant change in language preferences, especially in the capital.
"When asked which language do you speak at home? If we were to do a survey on the Chisinau municipality, we would find that Romanian is in first place, Moldovan is in second place and Russian is in third place. Although until the independence Russian was the most popular language," said Mihai Bologan.
On the political segment, Mihai Bologan noted the existence of several parties claiming to be unionist, but he says that the electorate with pro-unionist views has coalesced around a dominant party - PAS.
"There are several declared unionist parties, there is at least one party that has started to be more active lately, maybe it will manage to achieve something. But the unionist electorate has found a party that represents it and this is the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS). I think that a unionist movement still has a chance to live, but it matters a lot who are the leaders of this movement, who are the leaders," explained the director of the sociological company Date Inteligente, Mihai Bologan.
The public debate on "What is happening in the unionist political segment?" is organized by IPN News Agency within the project "Development of political culture in public debates". The project is supported by the German Hanns Seidel Foundation.
