Trade unions and employers call for minimum wage to rise to 6000 lei from July 1

The National Confederation of Trade Unions and the National Confederation of Employers of the Republic of Moldova call for raising the minimum wage to 6,000 lei, starting July 1. The request is formulated in a joint letter addressed to Prime Minister Dorin Recean, IPN reports.

The National Confederation of Trade Unions of Moldova says that the increase is necessary to maintain the purchasing power of employees in the face of inflation and continuous price rises, as well as to contribute to the sustainability of the pension system.

The request is also motivated by the subsistence minimum for a working family, which already exceeds 6120 lei.

In the context of the budget rectification "Budget +Plus", trade unions and employers are asking the Government to prioritize the resources allocated additionally for personnel expenses (over 290 million lei) to be directed to the increase of the minimum wage.

"Raising minimum wages is a prerequisite for combating in-work poverty and reducing social inequalities", the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) also emphasizes, urging all EU candidate countries to move forward on this issue, the letter to the Prime Minister says.
