15% of Moldova’s territory will be covered with woods in seven years

By 2020, 15% of Moldova’s territory will be covered with woods. Deputy Minister of the Environment Lazar Chirica has told Info-Prim Neo that there should be planted more oak trees so as to improve the fertility of soil. Currently, the wooded areas in Moldova represent 12%. A governmental commission was created at national level to work out a national plan for extending the wooded areas. The trees may be planted with money allocated from the state budget and from foreign investors’ contributions. According to the deputy minister, trees will be planted on areas where there are landslides and erosion and that form part of ecological routes and river and lake regeneration areas. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, vice director of the State Agency “Moldsilva” Tudor Botnari said that about 3,000 hectares should be planted with trees annually, starting with 2014, so as to reach the wood coverage percentage of 15% by 20120. About 3,000-4,000 trees are planted on a hectare. The financial resources needed for the purpose haven’t been yet determined.
