30 years of women’s work in Parliament to be celebrated during a month

The 30 years of work of women in Moldova’s Parliament will be celebrated during a month following a decision adopted by the MPs on March 12. The author of the proposal said this is homage rendered to the female MPs who devoted their life to the democratic development of the Republic of Moldova, IPN reports.

PAS MP Veronica Roșca said that this year Moldova will commemorate 25 years of the approval of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, 20 years of the adoption of the UN Security Council Resolution on Women, Peace and Security and ten years of the founding of UN Women by the UN General Assembly. In April 2020, it is 30 years of the formation of the first Parliament elected democratically in the Republic of Moldova, to which the women also contributed.

The informative note to the bill says that even if the national legislation on equality between women and men complies with the international commitments, its implementation is defective. The women continue to face discrimination and inequality in the social, economic and politician life, being deprived of efficient opportunities for taking part in decision-making in the public sector. The women represent only 23.76% of the MPs, which is much below the international standards.

The parliamentary groups will set up a working group that will think up the action plan for celebrating the event.
