Amber jewels confiscated a year after attempt to take them out of country

After almost a year of the attempt to smuggle amber jewels out of Moldova, these were confiscated for the benefit of the state, IPN reports.

The smuggling attempt was made in January 2021. Then, a young man was heading for Turkey by a truck with Russian registration numbers that towed a trailer. At the customs post, he said he didn’t have what to declare. But the truck was examined with a mobile scanner and over 1,250 pieces of amber jewelry, such as bracelets and necklaces, were found in the walls and fridge of the cab. Another lot of jewels was found and seized at the young man’s home in Vulcănești district.

The Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases said the Cahul Court ordered to confiscate the undeclared jewelry and to pay the equivalent value of truck and trailer used to commit the offense, of over 900,000 lei, to the state. The confiscated jewels were estimated at half a million lei.
