BEM, Banca Socială and Unibank collected over 2.9bn lei since withdrawal of licenses

Since their licenses were withdrawn in October 2015 and until June 30, 2024, Banca de Economii, Banca Socială and Unibank have collected funds totaling 2,953,063.5 lei. The National Bank of Moldova said the liquidators continue to take measures to recover the money, IPN reports.

Between November 2014 and October 2015, the National Bank granted Banca de Economii SA, Banca Socială and Unibank emergency loans insured with state guarantees in the total amount of 14,121,758.0 lei. Both the funds available in the accounts of the three banks at the date of the withdrawal of licenses and the funds that were subsequently collected by the liquidators are used to cover the expenses related to the liquidation process and to honor the claims related to the emergency loan.

From the date of withdrawal of banks’ licenses in October 2015, and until June 30, 2024 inclusive, the liquidators paid to the National Bank (until October 3, 2016) and the Ministry of Finance (starting with October 4, 2016) a part of the debts related to the emergency loans granted to the banks until the appointment of liquidators, which are in the first class of claims for payment.

In addition, during the second quarter of this year, the liquidators of the three banks organized a number of auctions for the purpose of selling the assets owned by the banks and the goods taken over. “The liquidators of the three banks continue to take measures to recover the money. Thus, the liquidators cooperate with the investigative bodies and judicial bodies and continue to work with the debtors, the repayment of the loans raised from these banks and the payment of the emergency loans granted by the NBM being the final goal,” reads a press release of the National Bank.
