Mariana S. Taranu, doctor of History, published a new tome “Eastern Moldova during the first Soviet occupation (1940-1941)”. According to critics, the book will fill in the Moldovan historiographical void, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“I focused on the terror as Soviets’ state policy, on the denationalization of education and the contemporaneous press. I found it necessary to unveil the religious persecutions of that time and I highlighted the archive sources, which have been underused so far”, she said.
The idea of this work first appeared in 2005. “It came to me when the false democrats PPCD voted Voronin as president. I was shocked and I asked myself what had happened to people’s mentality, why they were betrayed so often and why did they tolerate it. At that time, despite some intellectuals and newspapers publicly expressed their discontent, most people resigned themselves to the betrayal”, Mariana Taranu said.
Elena Siscanu, doctor of History, mentioned the work was very well-documented and it highlighted the terror of that period. The author carefully describes Soviets’ actions in this territory and their ways of recruiting informers. “It’s a great book that makes the most of the archive, unveiling new documents that show the tools used by the totalitarian regime in this occupied land”, Siscanu said.
Publicist Vlad Pohila stressed this tome impressed him from the very title.”Mariana Taranu had the courage to say an important truth in the title. It’s a work that exposes many new facts. Despite her calm style, the author says the truth firmly and loudly”, he remarked.
“Eastern Moldova during the first Soviet occupation (1940-1941)” is Mariana Taranu’s second work. She debuted in 2007 with “V. Lenin without make-up”.
