The nearly 30 broadcasters that failed to submit final reports on the coverage of the November 28 elections and the preceding campaign to the Broadcasting Coordination Council (BCC) will not be punished in any way because the legislation does not provide for specific sanctions, stated BCC member Dumitru Ciocan, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Out of 84 broadcasters that announced their intention to cover the campaign, 29 failed to present final reports. Dumitru Ciocan said one reason could be that some of the broadcasters eventually abandoned the idea of covering the campaign after making the formal announcement.
Ludmila Vasilache, another BCC member, said that the broadcasters will never learn to comply with the rules if the BCC goes on limiting itself to warnings and recommendations. Thus, the Council should push for the amendment of the Broadcasting Code, in particular Article 64, to provide for sanctions.
At the same time, BCC chair Gheorghe Gorincioi said that the Council’s report on the coverage of the campaign and election itself found that, overall, impartiality and plurality standards were met by the broadcasters, except for the pro-Communist channel NIT.
