The state of corn and sunflower crops in the central-eastern area of the country is better compared to the southern districts of the country. The degree of damage to crops is between 20% and 40%, with extremes of up to 80% in particular cases. State secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Vasile Șarban paid a working visit to Anenii Noi and Criuleni districts to assess the impact of high temperatures on second-group crops, IPN reports.
“Achieving stable yields is essential for the sustainable development of our agriculture. This complex process is influenced by the biological peculiarities of hybrids and varieties, cultivation technology and environmental conditions. The state of crops varies considerably from case to case, even at the same farmer, depending on the technologies applied and the varieties cultivated,” said Vasile Șarban, being quoted in a press release.
Specialists from the Ministry recommend farmers to grow domestic drought-tolerant corn hybrids adapted to local weather conditions. These hybrids, with a shorter vegetation period and lower specific water consumption, undergo adequate morpho-physiological changes to cope with variable environmental conditions.
