The gross external debt of the Republic of Moldova in the first half of this year decreased by 3.7 percent and totaled US$9,741.01 billion. Relative to the Gross Domestic Product, the external debt accounts for 56.7% (minus 4.5 percentage points compared to December 31, 2023), IPN reports, with reference to the National Bank of Moldova.
The long-term external debt continues to account for the largest part of the total external debt (73.7%).
The public external debt accounted for 37.1% of the total external debt, and the private debt for 62.7%.
According to preliminary data, the current account deficit of Moldova’s balance of payments in the second quarter of 2024 totaled -US$697.87 million, increasing by 80.4% compared to the same period of 2023, especially on account of the increase in the deficit of external trade in goods and the decrease in the surplus of primary incomes. The ratio of the current account deficit to the GDP was 16.6%, by 6.9 percentage points higher than in the second quarter of 2023.
