The proposals for modifying the current Broadcasting Code and the draft new code will be subject to broad public debates that will involve mass media experts. The initiative was put forward by Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu, IPN reports.
According to the Parliament’s press service, the invitees include MPs, national and foreign media experts, representatives of media outlets, civil society and of the development partners.
“The conclusions of the debates will be implemented in a move to enhance the information security of the Republic of Moldova and to create optimal conditions for developing local TV production,” stated Andrian Candu.
The debates will take place on July 26, starting at 2pm, in the conference hall of Radisson Blu Leogrand Hotel. The participants can confirm their participation in the event through the email address press@parlament.md or on the phone number 022 82 03 90.
Two legislative initiatives to amend and supplement the Broadcasting Code were registered in Parliament. As the given bills aroused heated debates, the Speaker decided to submit them to the Council of Europe, the Venice Commission, the human rights watchdog “Freedom House” and the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media for appraisal. Last September, the given international institutions issued a series of conclusions and recommendations over the bills that are designed to ensure the freedom of expression and pluralism of opinions through the angle of the European Convention on Human Rights and other international standards.
The new draft Broadcasting Code hasn’t been yet transmitted to the expert international institutions for consideration.
