Defense minister hands over medals to widows of Nistru war heroes
Minister of Defense Vitalie Marinuta on February 28 posthumously gave 40 medals to the windows of the heroes killed in the war for defending Moldova’s integrity and independence. The medals were handed over in a meeting held in Causeni town, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communiqué from the Ministry of Defense.
“The National Army is grateful to the patriots who showed courage and bravery in the difficult periods experienced by Moldova. The commemoration of the heroes killed in the armed conflict is a homage rendered to the wives who lost their husbands and to the combatants who survived the war. I assure you that the Ministry of Defense will continue to honor the memory of the heroes and will support the veterans of the armed conflict and the widows of those who died in battle,” Vitalie Marinuta said in the event.
Two commemorative plaques were unveiled in Causeni on the occasion of the Memory Day – “Alexei Cioban” at the Theoretical High School “Dimitrie Cantemir” and “Independence Heroes” in the building of the mayor’s office of Causeni.
After the festivity, the minister and representatives of the local administration observed a moment’s silence in memory of the heroes killed in the war and then took part in a commemoration meal.
The armed conflict of 1991 – 1992 involved about 29,000 people, 286 of whom died, while 284 remained invalids. Sixty-four invalids of the war for defending Moldova’s integrity and independence serve in the National Army.
On March 2, it is 20 years of the armed conflict on the Nistru. In 2011, Parliament decided that the Memory Day will be celebrated on March 2.
