The main threats to Moldova’s security come from inside the country, not from outside it, shows an opinion poll commissioned by the Information and Documentation Center on NATO in Moldova to Magenta Consulting. The poll results were presented on February 6, IPN reports.
Of the total respondents, 69% mentioned domestic threats, while 39% foreign threats. The first category includes such problems as immigration and depopulation, economic crisis, poverty and corruption. Among the external threats, 12% of those polled mentioned a potential war, 6% referred to Russia, while 5% to Romania, including the union scenario.
Asked to name the countries that are a threat to Moldova, 32% answered Russia, 14% – the U.S., 9% – Ukraine, while 8% – Romania. According to the study, those who follow the Russian mass media are more inclined to see a danger in the U.S. and Romania and less in Russia.
Asked about the main threats to their personal security, the people answered mainly poverty, corruption and immigration. Only 3% of the respondents stated the Russian army in Transnistria.
Some 90% of the Moldovans consider they are patriots. Of these, 64% are definitely patriots. In case of war, 76% of the respondents would be ready to defend the country. The number of those who consider themselves patriots is proportional to age, the young people being patriots the least.
