A 37-year-old man from Ungheni district was sentenced to four years and three months in prison after he drove his vehicle while inebriated to take home his drinking companion and later went over him with his car out of inattention. The defendant fled the scene without calling an ambulance and his friend died on the spot, IPN reports.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, it happened in October 2023, at around 7 p.m. The defendant was drunk but decided to drive home his drinking companion, who was also drunk. They travelled together on a street of Cioropcani village of Ungheni district and then his friend got out of the car near his home.

The defendant drove to another friend living nearby, but didn’t find him at home and travelled back by the same route. When travelling near the home of his passenger whom he previously left at home, he recklessly drove over the man lying on the road. The victim didn’t survive.

The man was remanded in custody. Recently, he was sentenced to four years and three months in a semi-closed jail, being banned from driving. The sentence can be challenged in a higher court.
