Incorrect accent and calques are among most often mistakes made on radio stations

The radio program presenters often pronounce the words incorrectly and use calques. The lowest number of linguistic mistakes are made in news programs, while the largest number in recreational programs and when the moderators improvise. The findings were presented by specialists of the Institute of Philology of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, who monitored 20 radio stations at the request of the Broadcasting Coordination Council (BCC), IPN reports.

According to the monitoring report, the radio presenters often do not know the form of the words and use ‘studiou’ instead of ‘studio’ or ‘embargou’ instead of ‘embargo’. They often use the calque from English ‘to apply for a scholarship.

The words ‘industry’, ‘standard, ‘limit’ and ’diploma’ are most often mispronounced by putting the accent incorrectly. There is a worrisome tendency to use the words ‘maxim’ and ‘minim’ instead of ‘maximum’ and ‘minimum’.

Specialists of the Philology Institute are working out a guidebook with the most frequently made mistakes. It will be published and distributed free to TV and radio stations.

This was the third monitoring performed by the BCC. In 2011 and 2012, there were monitored the TV channels. The Council’s chairman Marian Pocaznoi said there was a positive reaction after the monitoring. Two radio stations hired Romanian language teachers for their employees.

The reports are available on the website of the BCC.
