Law that protects students going to work abroad could not be passed

The legislative body Thursday could not adopt a bill on entrepreneurial activity that protects the students who go to work abroad during the summer vacation through the Work and Travel Agencies, as it was one vote short. The lawmakers of the ruling alliance got angry with unaffiliated MP Mihai Godea, who is on parliamentary strike and does not take part in the voting, Info-Prim Neo reports. The bill says the Work and Travel agencies should reduce the commission to at most US$500. Liberal MP Ana Gutu said they regret that Mihai Godea did not vote. “Within the commission on economy, we decided to give our votes so that the students who go through the Work and Travel programs do not pay more than US$500 to the organizational firms,” she stated, adding that because of Mihai Godea, this law was sent back to the commission and will be put to the vote again only in half a year. The head of the commission on economy, budget and finance Veaceslav Ionita said the law is very important because the Work and Travel firms often work based on forged documents and the young people who arrive in the U.S. do not have were to stay and remain on the street. “In order to prevent such things, we decided to license this activity so that these firms could be checked,” said Veaceslav Ionita. He also said that the MPs now will either prepare a new bill that would be discussed in two readings next week, or will annul the June 7 vote and vote on the bill again. The Summer Work and Travel Program in Moldova, which is administered by the U.S. Department of State, is a cultural exchange program that allows the university students to take part in educational and cultural exchange programs over a period of at most four months, during their summer vacation.
