Moldova could ask for protection for geographical indications from other states

The Republic of Moldova will be able to ask other states to grant protection for geographical indications and appellations of origin. Parliament ratified the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement on Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications, IPN reports.

The Geneva Act is a revision of the Lisbon Agreement for the Protection of Appellations of Origin and their International Registration, which was signed on October 31, 1958. Currently, the Lisbon Union consists of 43 states. The Geneva Act was drafted to improve the system for granting protection to applications of origin and their international registration. The ratification of this document will result in the protection of national interests and will have a positive effect on Moldovan producers.

Under the Geneva Act, the right of the Republic of Moldova to request protection for geographical indications and appellations of origin from other countries will be ensured. At the same time, Moldova will assume responsibility for examining applications for offering protection in the Republic of Moldova for geographical indications and appellations of origin from member states of the Lisbon Agreement.
