The chair of the Commission for national security, defense and public order, MP Chiril Moţpan, calls on the state institutions to take measures to ensure the security and health of the population. The request comes in connection with the existence of 23 storehouses for toxic substances throughout the country. Reaching groundwater and the aquatic environment, these substances pose a threat to the health of the inhabitants, said the MP at a press conference, quoted by IPN.
According to Chiril Moţpan, over 1600 land lots throughout the country are contaminated with persistent organic pollutants and industrial products. There are also territories with stocks of obsolete pesticides, the quantity of which is estimated at over 200 tons in solid fraction and over 88 tons in liquid fraction. They must be repacked and disposed of immediately, the parliamentarian insists.
Chiril Moţpan says another problem is that the 23 storehouses for toxic substances are left unguarded. "Most of these storage facilities are not under the supervision of the state, they are damaged and there is a huge risk of poisoning the land, the groundwater, and consequently of hurting the people," the MP states.
Chiril Moţpan also specifies that the activity of the National Agency for the Regulation of Nuclear and Radiological Activities (which is responsible for eliminating the risk of radioactive contamination of the population) is jeopardized due to a fire that took place in 2018 at the headquarters of the institution. At that time, equipment for detecting radioactive materials, worth over four million lei, was destroyed. So far, no culprits have been found and no thorough investigation has been made into the cause of the fire. The MP asks the Government and the competent authorities to carry out investigations regarding the establishment of the damages caused to the National Agency for the Regulation of Nuclear and Radiological Activities.
During a meeting with Kristina Baleisyte, head of the NATO Liaison Office in the Republic of Moldova, Chiril Moţpan proposed to submit a request to the NATO office for financial support in solving the problem of toxic substances in Moldova.
