Persons with disabilities could go to UN if their rights are violated

Prime Minister Pavel Filip signed the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in New York on September 28. The document confirms Moldova’s commitment at international level to contribute to further protecting the rights of persons with disabilities, IPN reports.

According to the Government’s press service, together with the signing of the protocol, the parties pledge to recognize the power of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities to receive and analyze complaints from citizens about the violation of the Convention’s provisions. There are defined the conditions for submitting complains and the mechanism of interaction between the Committee and the party and also with the plaintiff for removing the illegalities.

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was adopted on December 13, 2006, being signed by the Republic of Moldova on March 30, 2007. The EU member states and another 120 countries are a party to this. The parties are obliged to ensure the observance of the rights of persons with disabilities, including as regards the access to education, employment, transport, infrastructure and suffrage rights.
