The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) informed the Ukrainian and Russian authorities about the impossibility of satisfying the requests to return Moldovan prisoner Veaceslav Platon to Ukraine and to extradite him to Russia, IPN reports, quoting a press release of the institution.

After examining the requests made by the PGOs of the two countries, Moldova’s PGO informed that the requests cannot be granted because Veaceslav Platon holds Moldovan nationality and serves time in jail on the counts on which he was convicted and is to be tried in other cases under investigation. In his absence, the reasonable timeframe of investigations could be violated and the rights and interests of the injured parties would be thus infringed.

On December 10, 2019, the prosecutor general of Ukraine asked to return Veaceslav Platon to Ukraine for performing legal procedures and adopting a final decision as regards Moldova’s request to extradite him. On December 11, 2019, Russia’s PGO asked to extradite the businessman so that this could be held accountable for a number of serious offenses committed in Russia.

Veaceslav Platon serves his sentence in Penitentiary No. 13. He was found guilty of swindle, money laundering and active corruption. He is also investigated for tax evasion, causing of non-pecuniary damage by fraud and abuse of trust and misappropriation.
